Designed with law enforcement in mind this round was a massive step up in power over it’s parent case the 38ACP. It offered sufficient power from a semi-auto handgun to punch through a car door which was a relatively new development at the time. The plan was to chamber the Colt 1911 in this caliber and switch all Police forces over to this from their revolvers. However a few short years late the 357 Magnum hit the scene and prevent this change from catching on. Although this round could be considered a “flop” it actually lives on this day as a top choice in IPSC competition seeing usage from a number of the world’s top shooters.
