This cartridge debuted in 1957 and saw underwhelming sales from day 1. This is in part due to the fact that the 270 Winchester which is nearly identical ballistically debuted 32 years earlier. in a bid to boost sales in the 70’s Remington renamed this cartridge the 7mm-06 as an homage to its parent case the venerable 30-06. However this had little to no effect leading to them remaining it again only a few months later to the 7mm Express Remington. This change had the unforeseen side-effect of shooters confusing it with the popular 7mm Remington Magnum. This led to Remington changing the name back to 280 Remington a couple years later and effectively accepting the commercial failure of this round.
